This will change subject to seasonal demand.Price The use of pricing strategies such as penetration pricing, promotional pricing, and price discrimination will be used to market the items offered by the restaurant. sagacity pricing will be used to set a low initial price in order to penetrate the market quickly and deeply, so as to attract a large number of customers quickly and win a large market share. With time the high sales volume will result in falling costs, allowing the restaurant to cut its price even further. With promotional pricing, the restaurant will temporarily price its it ems or products below the list price and sometimes even below cost. This will take several forms. I.e. a few items or products will be priced as loss leading so as to attract customers into the restaurant in the hope that they will buy items at recipe mark-ups.Price discrimination will be used to offer customers different prices for the same items or products offered by the restaurant. For example, if a customer ordered a special dish, it would automatically come with a side order of rice, in which the price is already included in the price of the special dish. However, if they ordered rice one at a time and the sauce separately, they would have to pay different prices for the two items.Price list for The Star of IndiaThe Star of India AppetisersPrice () poulet Samosa3.20Veg Samosa3.20 deliver Samosa3.20Papadom0.40Sheek Kebab2.40Shami Kebab2.40Chicken or beloved Tikka2.40Chicken Chatt2.40Aloo Chatt2.40King peewee Butterfly3.50Potatoes of the day2.75The Star of India BreadsNan1.3 0Keema Nan1.80 veg Nan1.80Peshwari Nan1.80Garlic Nan1.80Balti Nan1.80Paratha Nan1.40Stuffed Paratha1.80Tandoori Roti1.20Chapati0.80The Star of India Tandoori DelicaciesHalf Tandoori Chicken4.70Whole Tandoori Chicken9.20Chicken or lamb Tikka4.70Chicken or Lamb Shaslik5.50Coconut Chicken5.50Tandoori King fish8.40Garlic Chicken5.50Tandoori Mixed Grill with nan7.95The Star of India Rice DelicaciesPilau Rice1.60Boiled Rice1.50 mushroom Rice1.95Egg Fried Rice1.95Lebu Rice1.95Garlic Rice1.95Narial Chawal1.95Vegetable Rice1.95Special Fried Rice1.95Keema Rice2.25The Star of India Biryani DelicaciesChicken, nucleus or peewee5.50King shrimp8.40Chicken or Lamb Tikka5.75Tandoori Chicken5.75Vegetable4.95Mushroom4.95The Star of India Special6.50The Star of India Balti DelicaciesChicken, Meat or Prawn5.75King Prawn8.40Vegetable4.80The Star of India Special6.95Chicken or Lamb Tikka6.75Chicken, Meat or Lamb Sagwala, Jalfrezi, Dhansak5.95The Star of India Jalfrezi DelicaciesChicken Jalfrezi4.60Pra wn Jalfrezi5.70Lamb Jalfrezi4.60King Prawn Jalfrezi7.40Chicken Tikka Jalfrezi5.60Lamb Tikka Jalfrezi5.60Vegetable Jalfrezi4.95The Star of India Karahi DelicaciesChicken Karahi5.20Prawn Karahi5.70Lamb Karahi5.20King Prawn Bhuna Karahi7.40Chicken Tikka Karahi5.60Lamb Tikka Karahi5.60Vegetable Karahi4.95The Star of India Bhuna DelicaciesChicken Bhuna4.40Prawn Bhuna5.40Lamb Bhuna4.40King Prawn Bhuna7.40Chicken Tikka Bhuna5.70Lamb Tikka Bhuna5.70Vegetable Bhuna4.95The Star of India Vindaloo / Madras DelicaciesChicken / Lamb get dressed4.10Chicken / Lamb Madras4.50Chicken / Lamb Vindaloo4.50Prawn Curry / Madras / Vindaloo4.80King Prawn Curry / Madras / Vindaloo6.50Vegetable Curry3.95The Star of India NoodlesMalabar Seafood5.70Chicken Madras5.20Konkan Chicken5.20Malabar veg5.20Veg madras5.20The Star of India BurgersLamb Burger5.20Chicken Burger4.80Veggie Burger4.80The Star of India Special DishesThe Star of India Special5.90The Star of India Khazana6.95Nawabi Chicken5.90Murgh Charga5.90Ac hari Chicken5.90Chingri Bahar7.95Lamb Nashilee5.90Ghoust Laziz5.90Jerra Chicken Massala5.90Kufta Massala5.90King Prawn Delight7.95Shaslik Massala5.90Garlic Green Chilli Massala5.90Special Tandoori King Prawn Massala7.95Butter Chicken5.90Peshwari Chicken5.90Black Pepper Chicken5.90Black Pepper King Prawn7.95Chicken Tikka Podeena5.90Chicken Tikka Massala5.90Chicken Tikka Pasanda5.90Chicken Tikka Markhani5.90Chicken Rezala5.90The Star of India DessertsGulab Jamun2.10Falooda3.00Chocolate, Vanilla, and Raspberry Ice Cream2.10The Star of India BeveragesFruit Juices1.30Mango and Coconut Lassi1.20Masala Chai1.00Coke or Diet Coke0.65Mineral Water0.65Place The business will be located in the Earls Court area of central London. Smallpox declined, until by 1900 it had almost disappeared. This was the first example of the brass accepting duty for an area of public health. (Lee, 1995p44)Cartwright in A social History of Medicine (1977) describes Jenners discovery as one of the most respect fit changes in the history of social medicine.his work is recognised as the starting line point of attempts to encounter infection by immunization. (adapted from Lee, 1995p45)Jenners work and the train of events that followed unnatural a social revolution. Individual choice was sacrificed for the interests of the community. (Cartwright, 1977p92)At the same time, two other diseases als o presented a challenge. TB cholera were more voiceless to tackle as both diseases spread as a result of poor living conditions. TB or consumption took hold as towns grew and took over from smallpox as the greatest killer disease. Cholera epidemics infatuated several times during the first half of the 19th century. In 1854 john Snow proved that cholera was connected with polluted water. He was able to show that a water pump in the Broadgate area of London was the origin of 500 cases. People using other pump near did not catch the disease. Once the Broadgate pump was attri only whene out of action, no further cases were reported in the area. Several arguments for non-intervention were put for struggled including that government intervention would interfere with peoples basic rights or the emancipation to be pestering. most people believed that if the state acted to break housing the righteous courage of the poor would be reduced. (Lee 1953 p53)A letter to The Times in 1854 read, We prefer to take our chance with cholera than be bullied into health. Many people have died from a good washing. (Quoted in Lee, 1995p53)But several chief(prenominal) people put the case for action by the state including William Farr and Thomas Southwood-Smith who both recommended government intervention. Tonge in Challenging History 1700-1914 says, Of all the passers for modify public health, Edwin Chadwick stands monumentally above the rest. Chadwick stressed the connection between public health an d disease and how such factors needed to be addressed by government intervention. Chadwicks report The sanitary conditions of the Labouring Population of Great Britain was published in 1842 and recommended that the government take steps to improve drainage, remove rubbish from the streets and improve the water supply. (Wilkes 2007 p 92) (Reynoldson 1996, p 113)http//t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbniK4kyWJkVFmbWMhttp//wpcontent.answers.com/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/9e/SirEdwinChadwick.jpg/200px-SirEdwinChadwick.jpg Edwin Chadwick (www.answers.com/topic/edwin-chadwick)The government distanced itself from Chadwicks report largely because of the influential figures he has discredited and the laissez-faire debate lasted for much of the 19th century. Loosely translated this means do not interfere. Some members of parliament were making money from rent on the slums and refused to commove them down. Eventually, however, the social effects of economic growth were so severe that stepwise the st ate became more involved in issues of public health. The great fume in 1858 (when a heat wave caused the Thames to smell worse than ever) providential the government into action. (Wilkes 2007).In 1861, Prince Alberts finish from typhoid was attri notwithstandinged to contaminated water from the Thames and put further pressure on the government to do something. (Cartwright, 1977, p95)In 1867, working(a) class men were given the right to vote. Political parties realised that by promising to improve living conditions, they could secure the working class vote. When the Conservatives won the 1874 election, they introduced many public health reforms. Aaron Wilkes (Medicine through Time) sees this as the most burning(prenominal) reason out why politicians began to make improvements. Some cities including Birmingham and Liverpool started some headway of slums, built sewers, improved refuse collection services and opened public baths. Some private companies such as Lever, Cadbury and R owntree precept the benefits of providing good housing for their workers. It was, however, not until after the First World War that extensive slum clearance was commenced. (Lee 1995p57)Miasma or the infectious mist given off by rotting animals, rubbish and human waste was thought to be the cause of many of the epidemics in the 19th Century. Scientists place germs using a microscope unless believed that the disease caused germs rather than the other way round. This was known as unwritten generation. Louis Pasteur questioned this theory and was able to prove that germs caused disease but many Doctors wouldnt deem his ideas. It took the German Doctor, Koch, to apply Pasteurs theory to human disease. Koch was able to prove that germs caused TB, cholera and anthrax. (Mantin Pulley, 1988p49)http//t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbnOdyqTCWJiq49tMhttp//web.ukonline.co.uk/b.gardner/pasteur.jpg Louis Pasteur (web.ukonline.co.uk/b.gardner/pasteur.htm)Pasteur built on Kochs work and developed a v accine for rabies. curtly the germs responsible for typhus, tetanus, typhoid, pneumonia, meningitis, plague, septicaemia and dysentery were identified. Once germs were discovered vaccines could be made. Scientists now had a powerful new weapon to passage of arms disease. (Wilkes, 2007p88)Vaccination is one of the greatest success stories of modern medicine. Smallpox has been wiped out and tuberculosis and polio have been significantly reduced. Children are now regularly vaccinated against a number if diseases. (Lee, 199582) The smallpox vaccine was given apologise in 1840 but it was some other 100 social classs before vaccination against TB was provided. This was followed by vaccines for diphtheria, whooping cough out and tetanus (1954), polio (1955), measles (1964) and rubella (1969). (Lee, 1995p82)Progress continues today as a new vaccine has been introduced this year which protects girls against the virus that causes cervical cancer. The 19th Century also saw increments in surgery. The problems were pain and infection. The breakthrough came with the development of anaesthetics and antiseptics. (Lee, 1995 pp5961)William Moston experimented with ether and James Simpson tried chloroform. As with most medical discoveries, the first reaction of surgeons was criticism. Some argued that the long term effects were unknown and others objected on religious grounds. In some cases patients cool it died if the anaesthetic wasnt correctly administered. Some people thought that surgeons would cut off whatever they liked while the patient was unconscious and army Doctors thought the use of anaesthetic was soft. (Reynoldson, 199697). Others verbalise that it was unnatural to ease a womans pain during childbirth. The breakthrough came when Queen capital of Seychelles used chloroform during the birth of her eighth baby and use of anaesthetics thus became common practice. (Wikes, 1988 p101)The use of anaesthetics was a great step forward but it didnt stop deaths from infection after the doing. In the 19th Century hospitals were dirty places. Patients with disease were herded together, the same instruments were used on many patients and Doctors didnt change their argumentation stained coats between operations. Doctor Joseph middle buster was influenced by Pasteur and believed it important to kill the bacteria in the operating theatre. He did this by spraying carbolic superman (although his theory wasnt quite accurate as the bacteria was really on the instruments not in the air, but the incidence of infection was reduced by some of the antiseptic also landing on the instruments in use). Lister encountered much opposition as nurses and doctors complained about the smell and the amount of time taken to faint the theatre. Lister didnt communicate well and surgeons who didnt work with him were not convinced. (Lee.1995 p64)Eventually antiseptics and cleanliness came together to form the modern approach to surgery or asepsis. By the beginning of th e 20th century Doctors were operating in a germ free environment, using sterilised equipment and wearing gowns masks. Death rates reduced massively at Newcastle Infirmary before 1873, 59.2% of patients died after an operation (pre antisepsis), after 1873 only 4% died (post antisepsis). (Figures from The Lancet in 1878 in Lee, 1995p65). usage of a carbolic spray during an operation circa. 1880 and the sterile environment of a modern operating department.http//t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn476AON2yuy0EGMhttp//www.answersingenesis.org/assets/images/articles/aid/v4/antiseptic-surgery.jpg http//t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbnsgiACWjAMvVpNMhttp//www.workingmats.com/images/Operating_Theatre_115313_08.jpg(www.history.langtreeshout.org/tag/lister/)(www.workingmats.com/images/Operating_Theatre)During the Crimean war (1854/56) Florence Nightingales influence saw death rates reduce as she was responsible for organising better water supplies and food and keeping the wards clean. Fiona Reynoldson in Me dicine Through Time says the death rate of hurt soldiers in hospital reduced by 40% under Nightingales influence. In 1899 a recruitment disturb for men to fight in the Boar War highlighted the fact that around 40% of those volunteering were disincline for military duty. In 1904 a government report concluded that there needed to be more government intervention to improve the health of children. When the Liberal government was elected in 1905, a large number of reforms were introduced including free school meals for poor children, a free school medical service and women were taught about hygiene and childcare. Pensions for over 70s and basic sick and unemployment relent were also introduced. Over the next 30 years successive governments took measures to improve the health of children and mortality rates dropped. (Wilkes, 2007p114)During the 1st World War, Prime subgenus Pastor Lloyd George promised soldiers returning homes fit for heroes. The government set itself a target of edif ice half a million decent homes by 1933. The war revolutionized gild and made us move in a new and dissimilar direction. (Fenwick-Baines, 2009)When Britain was plunged into the First World War the need for a way to combat staphylococcus, a highly resistant bacteria, was urgently needed. Many soldiers died, not from the bullets, but from the infection caused by the bullets deep in the body. Conditions in the trenches were appalling and wounds quick turned septic. Alexander Fleming worked on wounds and infections during the war and made an important discovery that the penicillin mould would attack and kill certain bacteria. Fleming is credited with its discovery but other scientists went on to develop the drug for human use. Initially, money wasnt ready(prenominal) for its manufacture but The Second World War was vital in progressing its mass production. The American government recognised its value and agreed to succumb drug companies to manufacture vast quantities to treat injur ed soldiers. Penicillin is still the most widely used antibiotic and is used to treat many bacterial infections, many other antibiotics followed . By the end of the war, drug companies made it on tap(predicate) for general use. (Wilkes, 2007 p118) (Board works, 2003)The problem of blood diddleage baffled Doctors for centuries but hundreds of wounded soldiers provided the strongest possible reason for expediting the establishment of the new blood transfusion service. This is another typical example of war acting as a accelerator for change. The 2nd World War very saw the health of the nation improve as rationing meant that fatty sugary foods were in short supply. The government urged people to dig for victory and grow their own vegetables. The government promoted healthy living including basic hygiene and immunisation against diphtheria all part of a campaign to have a healthy nation able to stand up to Hitler.(Board works, 2003)Dig For Victory http//www.5aday.nhs.uk/images/top_ tips_2/pic_carrot_eyes.jpgThe Dig for Victory campaign during the 2nd World War is remarkably similar to todays Try 5 message.(www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g 2009) (www.5aday.nhs.uk )Birth rates reduced with the availability of contraception and with few mouths to feed, better food was provided for children.Between the wars little changed as the economy go through difficulties (the 1930s depression) but during and after the Second World War there was a further huge development. In 1942 The Beveridge Report recommended a offbeat state and that the government should help people from the cradle to the grave. After the war people wanted change and a social revolution. The war was over and it was time to look to the future. Some people did not like the new ideas and said everyone should be independent, the rich objected to paying heavier taxes to fund the welfare state. (Cartwright 1977 p173)The suggestions made by Beveridge were not immediately put into force as the appeal was questioned bu t when Labour took power in 1945, the NHS was born. From the introduction of the NHS in 1948, everyone was entitle to free medical treatment. The welfare state and the NHS in occurrence met with opposition. Churchill and the hidebound party felt the cost was too much for the economy to bear. Critics suggested the health service was wasteful and that people were getting things they didnt need. The service was also free to overseas visitors and some argued that this was over-generous. The BMA objected, initially fearing Doctors would lose their independence and that their income would reduce as an employee of the NHS. Compromise was only reached when agreement was given that Doctors would still be able to take on private, fee-paying patients. (Lee 199595) (Reynoldson, 1996118) (Lloyd T. 1986289) (Wilkes, 2007123)The dawn of the NHS was a huge change in the way people accessed healthcare. After the war New Towns were built to switch over the inner city slums. The 1947 Town and Countr y Planning Act identified green belts where houses would not be allowed to swallow up the countryside. In 1954 the clean air act reduced smoke and smog in cities. In 1980, The Black Report stated that although health had improved since the introduction of the welfare state, huge inequalities in still existed between the rich and the poor. It concluded the reason for the disparity to be poverty. (BBC History, 2009)1992 saw the publication of The Health of the Nation. This was the first ever strategy for healthcare improvement setting out objectives and measurable targets in four key areas tit disease stroke, cancers, mental health, HIV/ aid and accidents. The areas were selected because they were either a major cause of premature death or avoidable, interventions were possible and achievements could be monitored. (Childs, 1996)In 2000 health authorities became more autonomous and the establishment of a healthy competition between them. However, postcode can now determine the qualit y of healthcare provided and whether the hospital can hold or is willing to pay for the specific drugs and treatments, Press reports in new months have highlighted how some patients been declined expensive cancer drugs by a particular hospital while it is provided to patients of a neighbouring authority. This contradicts the ethos of the NHS its position of equality of provision for all. abundant changes took place throughout the 19th and 20th centuries in terms of public health provision and scientific and medical discoveries. The NHS didnt stay completely free. It is seldom out of the news as waiting lists get longer because people are living longer. The main problem is funding as modern drugs and treatments are expensive. Most Infections and diseases can be prevented or cured but Doctors still struggle with heart disease and cancer. Viral infections like the common cold and AIDS cannot be cured and emphasis is now placed on educating people about how to avoid diseases like AIDS and lung cancer through lifestyle changes. (Wilkes A. 2007p124)Two aspects of modern living which can have a detrimental effect on the health of the population are take in and diet.Although initially promoted as cleansing the lungs by tobacco manufacturers, the detrimental effects of locoweed have been know for half a century. Naidoo Willis in national Health and Health Promotion developing practice highlight smoking as the single most preventable cause of ill health and premature death. A third of cancer deaths are united to smoking and it is also linked to heart and lung disease. Smoking is estimated to cost the NHS 1.7billion each year (Dept of Health 1998 Royal College of Physicians 1992 in Naidoo Willis 2009)Marlboros for Mummy Examples of early cigarette advertising.http//news.bbc.co.uk/nol/ overlap/spl/hi/pop_ups/03/uk_goodbye_tobacco_ads/img/2.jpg(news.bbc.co.uk//html/2.stm) (news.bbc.co.uk//html/2.stm, 2009)Early Cigarette advertising actually promoted the health be nefits claiming relief from asthma, wheezing and hay fever. Craven called itself the Doctors Choice. Marlbroro promoted the benefits of smoking to Mothers. In 1998 the government banned tobacco advertising and targeted an anti-smoking campaign at children, big(predicate) women and disadvantaged adults. Demand is controlled by taxation and a ban on smoking in a public places including pubs.Obesity is a maturement problem and has trebled since 1980. It is linked to social disadvantage and the way childrens lifestyles have changed over the last 50 years (more TV/computer time, less physical activity, convenience foods, working Mothers with less time). There is mounting pressure to ban the advertising of junk food. A high fat diet has been linked to heart disease and some cancers. NHS spending on sickness attributed to corpulency has been estimated to exceed 3.6billion. (Joint Health Surveys Unit, 2002 Mulvihill Quigley, 2003 Naidoo Willis 2009p239).Last year the government launche d the change4life education campaign to promote the message eat well, move more, live longer which encourages parents to make sure their children have a minimum of one hour cause each day and reduce the amount of fat in their diet.http//t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbnlg0Gy-_B7JmSnMhttp//www.sunseaandcycling.com/Files/Images/C4L_master-logo-rgb.jpg http//t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbnn39JMfcD3UH9DMhttp//images.teamsugar.com/files/upl2/1/15111/11_2009/cb3240a4f35793dc_uk-change-4-life-ad.jpg(www.nhs.uk/Change4life, 2009)Public Health interventions have evolved as the government have taken responsibility for living conditions and health service provision, mass vaccination and immunization programmes. The epidemiological transition in the 20th Century saw the main causes of death and illness shift from infections to illness such as heart disease and cancer where lifestyle is a huge factor. (Naidoo Wills 20054)Current public health measures include mass screening programmes for example for bre ast and cervical cancers, extensive vaccination programmes as well as education and advice delivered by practitioners and the media campaigns.Examples of recent/current health media campaigns.http//t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbnvS8pq7HettyShMhttp//www2.glos.ac.uk/offload/staff/news/swineflu.jpg http//t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbnqNfrnzs-ahQTYMhttp//draust.files.wordpress.com/2009/01/nhs-measles-poster.jpg http//t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbngslEVyv3VyG7SMhttp//www.elements4health.com/images/stories/conditions/breast-cancer-ribbon-2.jpg(www.chesterfield.gov.uk/lowgraphic)..(draust.wordpress.com)(www.elements4health.com/report-highlights-ser)The policy-making agenda is dominated by social responsibility and recognition of the associate between poverty and ill health. Research Paradigms and Concepts of Ontology and Epistemology

inquiry Paradigms and Concepts of Ontology and EpistemologyChapter 2 question methodologyThis chapter of our dissertation entrust ornament the methodology that was undertaken in order to conduct our construction. This chapter is b atomic number 18ly divided into dickens sections. In 1st section of the chapter we leave roll in the hay discuss a priori methodology. It includes inquiry ism, look for court and look strategy. In 2nd section of the chapter we pass discuss practical methodology. It includes cream of the subject, preconception, perspective, lit, info pull inion and try of methods. present we result not only set forth the methods that ar opted during our investigate attend to solely as well as afflict to explain and explain why they atomic numeral 18 preferred everywhere the alternatives methods that ar available.2.1 theoretic methodology2.1.1 Research philosophyDuring a business question it is imperative to think ab come out dis correspo nding interrogation paradigms and theme of ontology and epistemology. These search paradigms represent a parameter that controls the interrogation carry out from search bearing to the conclusion and recommendations of the search. Thats why it is of enormous signifi sessce to understand these features in order to move in harmonical manner and actions leading towards unambiguous investigation and making sure that look for worker biasnesses be minimized (Flower, 2009, p 1).2.1.1.1 Epistemological ChoiceEpistemological come concerns with the irre final result of what or should be regarded as acceptable fellowship in a discipline.(Bryman Bell, 2007, p. 16). Eriksson and Kovalainen decipher epistemology as what knowledge is and what be the sources and limits of knowledge (Eriksson and Kovalainen, 2008). It is important that the given piece of knowledge is standvas in the sexual congress manner. Epistemology is further divided into positivism, see to itivism and realis m.PositivismPositivism is the resultant of query in natural science whither a hypothesis is essayed that is derived from a ordinary theory. Positivism emphasizes that true and reliable knowledge is that which stands upon logic, practical experience and approving au pasttication. The purpose of theory is to generate hypotheses that croupe be tested and that exit be thereby whollyow expla kingdoms of laws to be assessed(Bryman Bell, 2007, p. 16). Positivism is generally think with three-figure inquiry where one deals a theory and piece of knowledge, then involves data and interprets it and hence proves the hypothesis to be true or not. The investigator seeking to adopt a decided plus stance exercises excerption of the study, the inquiry objective to pursue and the data to be self- self-contained (Saunders et al., 2009, p. 114). It is believed that the cocksure inquiry worker result use structured methodology with the aim of producing replicability.InterpretivismI nterpretivism is a stance contrary to positivism and is also know as anti-positivism. Philosophers of accessible science believe that subject matter of a interrogation in a social science that is undertaken upon many individuals and personals or institutions be polar from that of the natural science (Bryman Bell, 2007, p. 17). According to Saunders et al., (2009) phenomenology and symbolic interactionism ar the ii ingenious traditions that interpretivism comes from. Phenomenology refers to way in which we as humans make sense of the humanness around us. In symbolic interactionism we are in continual appendage of interpreting the social world around us in that we interpret the actions of whatever other(a)s with whom we interact and this interpretation leads adjustment of our own meaning and actions (Saunders et al., 2009, p. 116). naturalismRealism is another branch of epistemology that is similar in temperament to positivism. According to this philosophical position reality does exist independently of the human realization. There are two main imagecasts of realism. Bryman Bell, 2007 named them experiential realism and critical realism. Whereas Saunders et al., 2009 name them as rank realism and critical realism. Main difference among critical and enjoin realism is that critical realism claims that our knowledge is suffered in two phases. Firts there is an object and substance we see and experience trough our senses and in second phase process goes on after the senses receive the sensations. Whereas direct realism claims prime(prenominal) phase is enough and what we see is what we go through (Saunders et al., 2009, p. 117).In epistemological musing of our explore we take the positivist position. The reason piece of tail alternative of positivist stance is what we studied in the literature we develop a hypothesis on the basis of prevailing theories and in our trial-and-error understandings we forget test this hypothesis for accept ation or rejection. What we are loss to study is the usefulness of banks natural evaluation personate (CAMELS) with respect to outdoor(a) source grade models such as PACRA and Moodys. Another reason behind cream of this stance is the use of secondary data and positivism is unremarkably linked with researches that are numerical in nature such as statistical tools and figures.2.1.1.2 OntologyThis pillar of the research paradigm divides with the nature of social entities and realities. This raises the question of whether social entities give the bounce and should be considered objective entities that have reality outside to the social factors, or whether they can and should be considered social construction mannikin up from the perception and actions of the social actors (Bryman Bell, 2007, p. 17). Above we discussed two aspects of ontology, are cognize as objectivism and constructivism respectively. In ontological favor, our research thesis is objectivist in nature. For empirical finding of our thesis we will use statistical tools such as financial ratios. The result provided by these ratios will be rated on the outstrip of 1 to 5 footingd on the issued ranking system of CAMELS place model. Then we will compare the result provided by CAMELS military rank model with the issued ratings of PACRA rating agency of the same period of time. So it is obvious from our choice of ontological consideration that the research will be free from all sort of biasness of the authors.2.1.2 Research ApproachAt this stage of a research one has to decide on the basis of chosen theory thats is both learnt or contained in the literature that he/she will follow a deductive commence or inductive access code. In deductive forward motion one develops a hypothesis from the theory and devises research strategy to test the hypothesis to accept or reject it. Whereas in inductive approach one has to collect data, analyze it and develop theory found on the result of ana lyzed data (Saunders et al., 2009, p. 124).2.1.2.1 Deductive approachThis approach represents characteristics of the correlation among theory and research. On the basis of gained knowledge that may be inferred from the theoretical reflection about the research line of merchandise, one assumes a hypothesis that will be observed in empirical abridgment (Bryman Bell, 2007, p. 14).According to Robson (2002, cited in Saunders et al., 2009, p. 124) deductive research goes through 5 steps. First develop a hypothesis from a theory, second express the hypothesis in practicable terms, third is hypothesis testing, fourth analyzes the ill-tempered result of the inquiry and in the fifth and final stage verifies or modifies the theory on base of your findings. solicitation of quantitative data is an important characteristic of deductive approach although it may use qualitative data more or less times. In deductive approach highly structured methodology is implemented to assist repercussi on to guarantee reliability. world-wideization is another important characteristic of deductive approach (Saunders et al., 2009, p. 124-125).2.1.2.1 Inductive approachIn inductive approach theory is authentic on the basis of research observations. Researchers in inductive approach are predominantly concerned with the events that are actually taking place and deal with the secondary stress as against the large number in deductive approach. Researchers most standardizedly use qualitative data in this approach. bodily structure of the research in inductive approach is more(prenominal) flexible as less reason as compared to highly structured methodology and generalized characteristics of deductive approach (Saunders et al., 2009, p. 126-127).In our research we will use deductive approach and not the inductive approach. The primary feather reason behind selection of this approach is correlation among the theory and hypothesis. On the basis of studied literature and constructed t heoretical variety work we have derived a hypothesis. Our thesis findings will lead us towards the acceptation or rejection of hypothesis which is superiority of banks internal evaluation models with respect to external rating agencies models. As we know that deductive approach is highly structured methodology so our thesis will follow the predefined structure..2.1.3 Research strategyAccording to Bryman Bell, 2007 by research strategy, we manifestly mean a general taste to the conduct of business research. Two separate clusters of research strategy are qualitative and quantitative research. Both quantitative and qualitative researches are several(predicate) from each other not only on the basis of quantification and measurement of the result but also on the basis of epistemological and ontological foundations (Bryman Bell, 2007, p. 28).2.1.3.1 Quantitative researchQuantitative research is mostly apply in deductive approach where the aim of the study is to test a hypothesis fo r proving a theory. In quantitative research analysis of the result is mostly in song and quantify. Another characteristic of quantitative research is size of the type is genuinely large. Quantitative research is subject to a very low train of biasness in the interpretation from the research workers as statistical tools are used for analysis of the results. Quantitative research is more generalizable. Quantitative research is more positivist in nature when it comes to epistemological orientation. While in ontological orientation quantitative research is objectivist in nature (Bryman Bell, 2007, p. 28). According to Bryman Bell, 2007 quantitative research have 11 steps. Steps mentioned by them in their book line of products research methodsare as follow 1st Theory, 2nd Hypothesis, 3rd Research design, 4th Devise measures of concepts, 5th select research site, 6th select research subject / respondent, 7th administer research instruments / collect data, eighth Process data, 9t h Analyze data, 10th finding and conclusion and 11th is hold open up findings and conclusions.Fig 2.2 Based on the idea from Bryman Bell, 2007 the process of quantitative research.2.1.3.2 Qualitative researchQualitative research is the contrast of the quantitative research in almost every aspect. Qualitative method is mostly used in inductive research where emphasis is on the generation of a theory that is establish upon research observation. Analysis of the qualitative research is establish upon the words and statements and mostly in textual form. Qualitative research is more interpretivist in nature when it comes to epistemological orientation. While in ontological orientation qualitative research is constructivist in nature. Size of the try out in qualitative research is small. Researcher in the qualitative research requires special skills for the interpretations of the results. perverted to quantitative research, qualitative research is less generalizable and very low level of replicability. (Bryman Bell, 2007, p. 28). Below is diametricaliation chart of quantitative and qualitative research ground on different research aspects.Research AspectQuantitative ResearchQualitative ResearchScientific MethodDeductiveInductive genius of realityObjectivistConstructivistResearch objectiveDescription, explanation and predictionDescription, explorative and huskingNature of observationNarrow angle focus lens blanket(a) angle focus lensForm of dataQuantitative dataQualitative dataSample SizeLarge sample excellent sampleData analysisStatistical toolsSearch for patterns, themes and holistic featuresResultsGeneral findingsParticular findingsConclusionStatistical reportNarrative report self made chart based on the studied books and articles. In our research thesis we will use quantitative research strategy sooner of qualitative research. Selection of quantitative research strategy is based upon number of arguments other than presentation of result in numerics and fi gures. As in epistemology consideration our research is positivist in nature and in ontological consideration we has opted the stance of objectivist, this is another reason for our selection of quantitative research. Our research is fundamentally concerned with add up and use of statistical tools to measure and analyze these total and figures. We have selected deductive approach which is usually related with quantitative research strategy and we argued about its selection in previous section. So retentiveness in mind our research question and objective we selected this strategy that will be appropriate and will guide us though out our research process.2.1.4 Nature of ResearchThe relationship between events or factors is a great deal described, examine, and explain by the police detectives. The research can either be descriptive, instructive, exploratory or predictive nature. Nature of the research totally depends on research question. In descriptive research the researcher tri es to identify or describe the events. For example in descriptive research if the question is What is the present or past state of events? for this the researcher selects the representative sampling of the people. Whereas explanatory research is for events to be explain by the researcher and look for fundamental reasons. explanatory research is also referred to interpretive research. For example the researcher conducts explanatory research if they ask Why have these events happened in the manner they did? Or What are the implications of these events occurring as they have? (Rubin et al, 2010, 198). Exploratory research is a type of research when researcher is unable to find any or very fewer prior studies about the research question. Exploratory study aspire researcher to look for the ideas, Patterns, or hypothesis, instead of testing or verifying a theory. In exploratory research typical techniques are used here researcher comprises observation, case studies, and previous studies. In this type of research the researcher uses both qualitative and quantitative data. Exploratory research totally focuses on achieving the imminent and acquaintance with the subject area to examine at posterior stage (Collis Hussey, 2009, p. 6). Predictive research advances one step further than explanatory research. address of the study is to create justification for what is happening in grouchy circumstances. Predictive researchis concerned with the anticipation of a possibility of some occurrence. Aim of predictive research is to generalize the investigation by forecasting some phenomena on the foundation of hypothesized, general relationships. Hence we can say that solution provided by a predictive research in a detail situation can be applicable to some other problems of similar nature, provided that the solution is valid (Collis Hussey, 2009, p. 6).Nature of our research is exploratory in nature as we didnt find any previous research work on the same research problem. The re are some articles and thesis that reflects the employ of camels rating model framework on any starticular or limited number of banks. As in our research we will try to investigate the superiority of banks internal rating models with respect to external credit rating agencies, we found no research work in this particular field. Our research will open a new window of research in the field of banking rating systems.2.1.5 clipping horizon of researchTime horizon of research plays a very significant role for both authors of the research and readers of the research. From researchers nous of date it is important to understand that what type and calibre of data they are collecting for the research and how considerably it can be collected. Some time it is very difficult and time consuming to collect the data spread over long period of time. From readers point of view time horizon of the research is of great importance as it shows credibleness and quality of the research observation s. According to Sunders et al. 2009 time horizon of the research can be divided into two types cross-sectional research and longitudinal research (Saunders et al.2009, p. 155).2.1.5.1 Longitudinal studyLongitudinal study is such type of a research in which same sample of state is observed over a longer period of time. Longitudinal research is a type of observational research in which the subjects are observed without manipulations and hence can be argued that it has less potential to detect cause and effects relationships of variables as do by the experimental studies. In longitudinal research, researchers have the chance to observe changes and improvement that took place over the period of time (Lindborg Ohlsson, 2009, p. 15).2.1.5.2 cross-section(a) study cross-sectional research is a study of sample observations or of a people in which a researcher makes her/his study and get result for a short period of time or on a single occasion. From the universe researcher takes sample and within that sample he/she distribute the variables, and sometime the variables which are predict and designated on the bases of fairish training which he/she gets from other sources. Descriptive and exploratory studies are ofttimes cross-sectional. For example a single survey of a country to describe the population of the specialized country at a given time. Cross-sectional study is also very close to explanatory studies. A researcher conducts a survey on national base to examine the nation problem at a given time (Hulley et al, 2007, p.109).Keeping in mind supra arguments about longitudinal and cross-sectional studies, we can easily say that our research is a cross-sectional study. As in our thesis we will manipulate one category annual financial reports for the social class finish on 31st Dec 2010, and all 17 banks belongs from Pakistan. It would be of great significance to use annual reports of more than only year but the problem is at the same time we need to collect published credit ratings of banks for the same year and that was very difficult to collets as most banks do not keep their old records of ratings. As we discussed above that cross-sectional studies are mostly exploratory or descriptive in nature and our research is also exploratory in nature.2.2 Practical MethodologySelection of the research topicBoth authors of the thesis come from Muslim Republic of Pakistan where banking diligence is on the boom despite of the general sparing turmoil. As far as our educational background is concerned, one of the authors has through of BBA (Hons) with major(ip) in Finance and second author has done MBA with major in Finance, in which we studied several courses about banking and finance. This was the point where our affaire was developed in the field of banking. Now being the students of Master in Finance, keeping in view our future professional careers in the field of banking and finance, we choose this research topic. As our research is focus ing on CAMELS rating model that takes into account 6 important component of banking industry, it will give us better brain and knowledge about performance of banking industry particularly in Pakistan. Another reason behind selection of this research topic is our personal curiosity about the ratings of the banks particularly in Pakistan. preconceived ideaPreconception about the research topic is quite important as it develops interest of the researcher and involves him neutrally in the topic. Both authors of the thesis worked as an internee in conventional bank in Pakistan after completion of their studies and have gained some practical experience of banking. In our practical experiences we observed that not all of above but some of these factors that are addressed in ratings models are of great importance for better performance of the banks.PerspectivePerspective provides point of view about the chosen field of study from several angles with different aspects, providing a pool of o ptions from which the most suitable one is to be selected date keeping in mind your research question and purpose. Our thesis is based upon the superiority of CAMELS rating model results with respect to external rating agencies we will be looking at it from internal point of view of the banks and their regulative authorities. But it readers can also be external users such as rating agencies and will be useful for them as well.Data Collection MethodFor any type of research study data army is an important aspect. Data is the source from where researchers can get germane(predicate) information to answer the research questions. To run across applicable information researchers use primary and secondary data as a sources. Primary data is collected or perceived straight from the first time experience. Or we can say that data collected for the first time particularly for this research problem. The sources contained in primary data are questionnaires, observations, social surveys, expe riments and interviews. On the other hand secondary data is published and the data collected by someone else in the past. We use the published and collected data by someone else to solve our problems but the problem might be different from others. The sources from which we can collect secondary data are articles, books, journals, and web-based data (Ghauri Gronhaug, 2005, p. 91-102).Theoretical framework of our study that is based upon secondary data, we read all relevant literature to our study that gave us full knowledge and beneficial instinct of our research questions. On the basis of this further study should be conducted. Findings of our research are totally dependent upon secondary. Findings of our research are complex in nature but our secondary data will help us to achieve this objective. The electronic search engine is the main source in our study we used Ume University electronic library, Google search, electronic books we also use printed materials like books.Literatur e studiedAccess to the relevant and authentic literature for a researcher is of great importance. It provides basis for the researcher to build upon the theoretical frame work of a chosen field of study and research design (Brayman Bell, 2007, p. 94). In the beginning of our research we studied some articles regarding the financial crises caused by the collapse of leading financial institutions of that time and banking industry of Pakistan afterwards we collected some articles and books through university archives database and internet search about research methods to construct research methodology chapter of our thesis and to guide us throughout our thesis. Articles are mostly collected from journals of Banking and Finance, journal of international banking regulation and the fall over of financial studies accessed through university provided logins on its database. It is a difficult task to gather relevant articles as one comes across so many articles that look relevant but they are not in real. We also studied some online books that are available via different websites such as www.book.google.com. We also gathered some material such as brochures and working paper about the functionings and methods used for ratings of financial institutions form rating agencies websites including SPs, PACRA, and regulatory authorities such as Basel and SBoP. The collected materials provide us better understanding and capabilities to work in the field rating systems.SamplingSample is a subset of upstanding population that is selected to represent the population in any specific research to perform statistical inferences and to make judgments about the whole population on the basis of selected sample. For researchers it is very important to select appropriate sample from population to make inferences. There are two primary reasons why researchers select a sample for their research instead of studying the whole population, 1st it is very costly and 2nd is the time limitation for a research. According to Bryman Bell, sample is a fragment of population chosen for mental test or research. Talking in a broader sense there are basically two types of sampling approaches chance and non chance approach (Bryman Bell, 2007, p. 182).Probability sampling is an approach in which each and every unit of population has equal chance of being selected in the sample and their probability of selection is greater than 0. This is the most suitable approach that eliminates bias in sample selection and reduces sampling error. Simple random sampling, systematic or interval random sampling, stratified sampling and cluster sampling are some types of probability sampling (Brayman Bell, 2007, p. 182). Whereas on the other side non probability sampling is an approach in which probability of selection of elements is not known or some elements of the population have no chance to be selected as a sample. Referral (Snow ball) sample, quota sample, criteria sample, homogeneous sam ple, critical sample and matched sample are the types of non-probability sampling.Referral sampling method is also knows as snow ball sampling. This type of sampling procedure is used when it is difficult to find subjects or samples for the research. In this type of a research sample we cannot identify our sample in advance and important consideration is to find initial subjects and informants. From initial subjects we can ask to identify further subjects for our research sample and the process continues to go on like a snow ball (Swisher, 2010, p.1). In Quota samplingpopulation is first divided into sub root words based on some criteria and then subjects are selected as a sample from each congregation. Quota sampling can be further divided in two sub groups known as comparative and non proportional quota sampling. In proportional quota sampling, sample of every sub group of population is represented by its proportional weight age of the population. Where as in non proportional qu ota sampling a limit of minimum numbers of sample subjects are set as a standard and are not necessary to represent its proportion in the population. It only has to justify that the chosen sample is able enough to represent a small group in a population. Heterogeneity sampling is a procedure when we select sample for our research that will represent every group of thought or variables of the population, on the other hand Homogeneous sampling is a procedure of sampling when we want to study about some specific factors or variables and their effect on the outcome that represent the population (Trochin, William, 2006). Criteria sampling is a procedure to select sample from the population that is based upon some specified and thoughtful criteria. Criteria set by the researchers fulfilled by any subject that represents the population should be included in the sample and any subject fail to meet the criteria is not included in sample that will represent the population (Swisher, 2010, p.4 ).To make a sample for our research we have selected criteria sampling method. As we are working on the CAMELS rating model and its replicability to the results of the external credit rating agencies published ratings, so for that we have to work upon banks annual financial reports. Our criteria for the banks to be included as a sample is the availableness of their audited annual financial reports for the year ended 31st Dec 2010. Total population of number of banks in operation(p) in Pakistan is 38. Out of 38 banks 5 banks are Islamic commercial banks and operating on Sharia standards that is to great extent different from commercial banks system. CAMELS rating model is designed for conventional banks and its applicability on Islamic banks is argued by several authors but contradicted by others. So for this particular reason we did not include Islamic banks in our sample. There are 6 distant banks operating with in Pakistan as subsidiaries of other multinational banks, and these banks prepare their annual financial reports and submit it in their Head offices that further add up in their consolidate annul reports. So there were some complications in collection of their annual reports and its interpretation. Because of this reason we did not include these foreign banks as our sample for our thesis. Further on searching for the annual audited financial reports of the banks, we find out that till date 10 banks did not published or announced their annual financial reports. As these banks did not meet with the predefined criteria of availability of their annual financial reports, they are also excluded and are not part of our sample. At the end we are left behind with 17 banks and their audited annual financial reports, so our sample includes 17 commercial banks from Pakistan.

Importance Of Self Reflection In Learning

Importance Of Self Reflection In Learning snitchSelf rumination is integrity of the important phases of encyclopedism. As a practiced radiation patterner, self reflection is of the essence(p) in revisal to be a great graphic former. The art that I had chosen is the naturalize cartridge regale cast of SMJK Nan Hwa, Sitiawan that I had done during my internship at sinning BOON BENG PRINTING SDN BHD. fumble BOON BENG PRINTING SDN BHD is a depression company that pictures a platform for people to have their own customization envision for their own printing order especially the government education incision like the primary schools, secondary schools, high schools, colleges and early(a)s. The theme of the school snip cover for this year was to revise from the past and disclose more or lessthing new. The concept of the cover founding is to design the cover that suits their theme. Besides, the client in like manner wanted the eastern feel in the cover design mainl y because of the identity of the school. In this examine, I impart be evaluate and examine myself done this artwork. This essay will be focusing on evaluating the influences on my design styles, design theories application, the design trends, appropriateness of the context, ethics and so on. Besides, I will also reflecting myself on the design works. I will explain the weaknesses and problems that I had go some in the design process. Each step of the design process will be explaining thoroughly in this essay.IntroductionAs a erudite graphic design graduate without any personal reflection from time to time, is not compatible to be a great source. Self reflection is a form of personal response to the survives, situations, unconstipatedts or even the milieu that happened around us. The reflective essay ignore be considered as a mirror that reflects our own personalities and the growth process in us. This is very life-or-death to everyone especially a cause like us. Reflec tive essay attentions to hazard out our own personality, ability, design style and others. It can be considered as a processing phase where view and learning take tramp and it will help us to be a greater designer in the future. Therefore, the artwork chosen for this reflective essay is the school powder store publisher cover design of SMJK Nan Hwa, Sitiawan for the year 2010. This artwork was produced during the fourteen weeks of internship at SIN BOON BENG PRINTING SDN BHD. As one of the member of SIN BOON BENG PRINTING SDN BHD, I was assigned to do the school powder magazine cover design for SMJK Nan Hwa, Sitiawan. This is one of the designs that I had given one hundred percent freedom in doing the design based on the clients requirements which means I did the design individually.Every time I rifle a design, I like to do some brainstorming and school principal mapping for further estimate generation. Since the school magazines theme is given by the school, I assay to fi nd the denotative and connotative meaning of the theme. Besides, I also did some look into on the layout design in order to do a break in cover design for the school. I tried to refer to the resources of the company and also some introductory design they had did for the school to gain some inspiration. Once I had done with the cover design, I showed it to my supervisor before it is shown to the client. I had done few designs for the school. The final examination artwork that had chosen is mainly because I was able to create the bond mingled with the design and the theme. My supervisor and mentor had given me some comments for emendments during the design process. This concession was actually quite challenging. This is because I deprivation to think about the idea and concept all by myself. My supervisor and mentor just gave me some opinions and comments to improve my design. I was not given any guidance to do the design except the clients requirements. In this assignment, I h ad tried very sternly to implement the intimacy that I had learnt in the university. After I did the design, the final artwork was email to the client and the client was quite satisfied about it.Scope of studyThis study focuses on evaluating and examines the reflecting process on my artwork. This write up attempts to present a preview of developments and the involvement in the general flying field of design process development. Therefore it will address issues such as design methodologies, markets design trend, application of knowledge and others. The development process will be addressed through different features of case studies, design theories and methodologies in this essay. This study summarizes some of the breeding, as intimately as information from the previous artworks, in an attempt to illustrate the evolution of my design growing process. It reviews, as well, researches, knowledge and experiences that brought changes in my design cargoner.Objectives/ Aims of essaySe lf reflection is a very important phase for everyone especially a young designer like me. It is highly beneficial to students development and provides a great time value in students graduated life. Those students who ar well equipped and managed to done well during this phase probably might have a great triumph in their career life. It also prepared us to face the accepted indus sweat working environment and make us understand other strengths and weakness so that we can improve ourselves and prepared ourselves for a better future. Self reflective writing indirectly develops our critical thinking and qualification us to consider the comments or critics of our design so that we can improve about it. The objectives of self reflective essay are as followingsTo provide us an opportunity to practice, evaluate and examine our knowledge in our learning process.Through self reflections, we are able to gain practical experience that is related to our course and tho enhance our basic ski lls that have been learnt in university through this self reflection session. Furthermore, through this self reflection session, we had a chance to implement what we have learned in the class and yet we are able to learn even more no thing in design sense or skills throughout this session. To equip ourselves. It is essential that every designer should cultivate self reflection in our design life so that our critical thinking, creativities and skills will be improved in the passage of time. Learning is a life-long process. Learning through our own mistakes and experiences even required more time and more difficulties because we need to evaluate ourselves and learn from our mistakes. It also helps to speed up the learning process of how our knowledge could be applied in the reality. To develop our critical thinking and enhance our creativities. detailed thinking is a mindset that is able to conceptualize, apply, analyze, synthesize, and/or evaluate information through observations, expe riences, reflections, reasoning, or communications. Self reflections help to develop our critical thinking whereby we are able to process the information, comments or critics and accept it with ordinary mindset. We are able to accept every critic and listen to the comments around us. We are also able to analysis the comments and critics in order to improve ourselves for a better future.Rationale of essayThe study of reflecting ourselves on the graphic design and multimedia field through previous artworks can be a learning paradigm in the higher level to enhance our knowledge and communication skills as well. This is not only basic education be learned by todays students but acquisition of learning skills and knowledge for salaried employment and full participation in countrys society. The essays goal is designed to help students improve academic competence, develop employability skills, implement a career invent and participate in a career pathway in homework for post secondary ed ucation or careers in the graphic design and multimedia field after graduating. This goal can be achieved through the self reflection process that can guide and evaluate ourselves and try to learn from the mistakes. The output of this study is a source material that the teachers can assimilate and disseminate by diffusion and induction technique.Problem lineIn every design process, there are always umteen problems occurred during the design phase. I had several problems in designing the school magazine cover. The school had provided their own theme design in a circuit shape and they requested to remain it. As the result, I had limited to do a circle design on the surrounding of the theme. As the logo design for the school theme is in white colour, I need to consider the suitable colours for the cover. Besides, the client requested to have the oriental feel on the cover and yet can bring up the theme. In order to solve the problems, I did a lot of research on the oriental at first . I also did the research on the theme of the school where it actually came from Confucius, to learn something new from the past.

Tao Of Pooh And Application Life And Therapy Philosophy Essay

Tao Of Pooh And Application Life And Therapy Philosophy EssayThis referenceship discusses how the book the Tao Of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff relates the concept of Taoism to the characters from the Winnie The Pooh by A A Milne and their application to carriage sentence and therapy. In The Tao of Pooh, Benjamin Hoff utilizes characters from Winnie the Pooh to attempt to explain the fundamentals of Taoism. By observing Eeyore, piglet, run, motor horn, Tigger, and Pooh, it is easy to see that the actions of the character Pooh better(p) report Taoism. One of the most important rationales of Taoism used in the book is the uncarved block. Hoff uses the characters from A A Milnes Winnie the Pooh books to illustrate and explain the basics of Taoist philosophy, demo how Pooh himself is the epitome of the Taoist thinker, enjoying life with simplicity but not stupidity. The author explains that Taoists try to appreciate, learn from, and hit with whatever happens in life, whereas, in con trast, Confucianism attempts to shoot the breeze order, and Buddhists see lifes tribulations as obstacles to be overcome before achieving Nirvana. He describes how Tao is the Way, which apprize be understood but not defined, and illustrates key elements of Tao such as Pu, the uncarved block, and Wu wei, going with the flow. In case you should think that this book is in whole too simplistic, I should add that Hoff touches on the writings of Lao-Tzu (author of the Tao Te Ching), Chuang-tse, the poet Li Po, and other Taoist philosophers, giving his own interpretations of the passages. Hoff shows how Pooh best explains the Uncarved Block. The principle of the Uncarved Block is that things that argon simple contain their own raw(a) power, power that after part be spoiled and lost when overcomplicated. Using the characters he shows how our lives roll in the hay be sabotaged by errors in opinion and how it can be prevented. Hoff uses Rabbit to show when you argon racing through li fe you can miss taboo on the valuable things that make up life itself. We seem to jeopardize ourselves by thinking too much of the self. Owl is used to show that when trying to find underlying meaning for everything you overcomplicate it. Hoff uses Piglet in the sense that Piglet is al representations scared and as a result scared to try things, if Piglet wouldnt dwell in worry, he would accomplish much(prenominal), and find happiness .Sometimes cleaveing less(prenominal) in your head is an advantage. Hoff goes on to show that the character of Eeyore is perpetually depressed and dwells in negativity. If he abstained from this life would be completely different. Now finally we come to Pooh. The author exemplifies how Pooh doesnt stay in worry, nor is he over-analytical, he stays in the spontaneous. As a result of staying in the way he finds everything goes its own course and counterfeiting out as a result of his non-action. Pooh goes with the flow of constitution and doesnt in terfere. He leads a life of simplicity and one bare of worry. This is a undefiled reflection of someone who follows the Tao. I think this is more or less a basic explanation of Tao and how to apply it to our lives by modeling out behavior in a likewise manner. There arent any concealed references here only face value application. The use of the cartoon characters that we all are familiar with is a very useful strategy. It is a way of explanation that transcends all racial, sexual, gender barriers. For example, we wont try too overweight or explain too much, because that would only Confuse things, and because it would leave the pictorial matter that it was all only an intellectual idea that could be left on the intellectual level and ignored. (p. 10) He uses each chapter of the book to teach a new principle of the Uncarved Block of Taoism. In each chapter he tells a Winnie the Pooh story and then explains how it relates to Taoism. Hoff writes a chapter teaching how cunningness does not always help, but it sometimes destroys things and is the reason that things do not work out. Hoff teaches that the Taoist believe that if you understand Inner Nature it is far more effective than k like a shotledge or cleverness. He uses a verse form called Cottleston Pie. The poem explains how things just are as they are and how people try to burst these principles with their everyday lives. There is as well as the story of Tigger and Roo. Tigger tries to be what he is not and as a result everything goes wrong and he always ends up departting stuck in a tree. Hoff also explains that working with Nature is best in the sense that you do not screw things up with a story about Eeyore getting stuck in the river. Everybody had been trying to think of clever ways to get Eeyore out of the river when Pooh said that if they just dropped a sizeable stone into it, then it would just wash Eeyore ashore. He did it without even thinking, because thinking would complicate things, an d of course it worked. Pooh worked with Nature and things worked out for him. As you can see, Hoff uses many an(prenominal) a(prenominal) different Winnie the Pooh stories to teach the uncomplicated ways of the Taoist. The only argument that Hoff actually presents is whether or not the Taoist way is the best way and whether or not it really works. When you look at it from the point of Pooh and the stories he is a part of, you are able to see how easily the Taoist political orientation fits snuggly into Pooh and his world. Obviously if you do not believe that cleverness and knowledge are not important, then you will not agree with anything Hoff is saying, but he makes you believe in showing you how it always works out with Pooh. He argues whether or not cleverness and knowledge really are important. For example, it can be explained in the story when Eeyore gets stuck in the river. Clever ways do not work, but Poohs simple way always seem to work surprisingly well. Hoff also argue s how the Taoist believes that over exhausting ourselves needlessly only works against us. He uses Rabbit to explain this. Quite simply, Rabbit is always in a hurry, he is the very face of stress itself. Hoff explains these so called creatures like a shadow. Shadows are always rushing along. They are also always trying to lose their shadows. They try to run from them not realizing that they cannot, that they are one and the same.Hoff argues that by just sitting down and enjoying a comely sunny day, like Pooh would do, you can complicate things. You do not get the full fulfillment of your life. There is the argument that this is just using examples to come to the conclusions that we have already come to. I believe however, that one cannot free himself of the weight of our foolish ways until we have exposed that fallacy and this is a vehicle to do that without feeling condescended by an authority figure that many associate with other comparative theories. Case and point Hoffs adapti on of Winnie the Pooh to Taoist philosophy is brilliant and yet never strays from its humility. Through this I can now see how the field of psychology, is a chaotic discipline much more suited to the Taoist approach of going with the flow-the Wu wei, then against it. In Hoffs definition of A A Milnes characters I was able to see myself trying to be like the Owl, while actually being a combination of the Rabbit and the pessimistic Eeyore. Hoff has shown me how the ideal is to be a simple character such as Pooh himself, accepting life, work, and other people as they are preferably than trying to impose order on them. I now seek to accept and move with events as they occur, preferring not to try to impose spay nor viewing changes it as an obstacle to be overcome. It all comes down to espousal and will. When you yield to the flow you find that it goes along with the grain of your life rather of against it. This approach spills over into every aspect of life, keeping them simple, l etting nature direct the flow as it were.
